Is Hydraulic Fracturing Any Worse Than Turning on the Electricity?

The World Energy Council’s report Global Transport Scenarios 2050 stated “Only with discovery, promotion and development of new energy resources, matched to innovation and improvements in current technologies, catalyzed by optimally formulated policies can we hope to ensure a more sustainable transport future for current and future generations.”[1]

Thought aimed at renewable energy technologies; it is no less applicable to natural gas. Like it or not renewable energy has long way to go to make an impact on any onhe country’s energy inventory. The risk of not developing natural gas supplies from unconventional shale gas and coal bed reserves far outweighs any environmental risks when such risks have been shown though tens of thousands of hydraulically fractured wells to be minimal, when done right.

• We know there will be car fatalities, but we still drive.
• We know when we flick on the switch; the majority of electrons come from dirty coal.
• We know there will be airplane fatalities, but still we fly.
• We know that coal is strictly environmentally harmful, but we still use it to generate electricity.
• We know that petroleum makes many countries dependent on foreign oil, but we still fuel our cars with it.
• We know that there will be fatal coal mining accidents, but we continue to mine it.
• We know that 95% of all toothpaste sold in the U.S. contain fluoride a toxic substance, but we still brush our teeth.
• We know some day we will die, but we continue to live on.

The world is full of risks, we work to manage that risk and go on. Stopping technology is not an option with mankind. Hydraulic fracturing is one technology that has been tarred and feathered far beyond reason.
