A House Built of Me’s Rather than We’s Cannot Stand

In anticipation of this evening’s Job Speech by President Obama, it is as true today as it was on June 16, 1858 when Abraham Lincoln stood in front of 1,000 Republican delegates at the Republican State Convention in Springfield, Illinois and proclaimed these words: “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”

The one thing we, all American’s, can all agree on is that there is an economic and job situation in the United States that threatens the future of our country. We may agree and disagree on how to remedy the situation. This disagreement is healthy; depending on the time it takes and the path it puts us on.  However, we should also agree that if the Me’s play with our fate and the survival of our country, all hell will break loose.

There is a document call the Constitution (of the United States), that states:

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

Of the 4,548 words in the Constitution, the word “We” is used twice, i.e., the first word in the document and in the last line “We have hereunto subscribed our Names.” The word “Me” is not used in the Constitution.

It’s time for the Me’s to put aside their personal agenda and do in terms of the We’s. It’s all about “Us” and the “U.S.”

    Unfortunately the “Me’s” are not going away. Ever since the radical leftists of the sixties have taken over the public dialogue we have been engulfed in the politics of identity. Too many Americans look at the world through their own prism so we now have a variety of different agendas: gay, lesbian, black, latino, disabled, etc. This is encouraged by the left which has succumbed to group think and group politics. This is not healty for a country. Robert Frost warned us many years ago to limit the number of groups we belong to else we become divided and selfish.
