A Clarion Call on Energy: Our Goals Can Be Achieved

August 17, 2010

My commentary, “A Clarion Call on Energy: Our Goals Can Be Achieved,” regarding a New Your Times article ” “Portugal Gives Itself a Clean-Energy Makeover” (front page, Aug. 10) was published in The New York Times, Opinion Section,  August 17, 2010, The commentary indicates:

“Portugal Gives Itself a Clean-Energy Makeover” says it all:

With a plan, a will and a way, ambitious energy goals can be achieved. From a bet to a dedicated five-year initiative, Portugal now receives 45 percent of its electrical energy from renewable energy sources.

In contrast, the United States, with all its rhetoric, high and mighty goals, and capital expenditures for what seems to be an eternity, generates about 3 percent of its electrical energy from renewables.

Hey, America, wake up. You’re the energy laughingstock of the world. Stop draining dollars from our soil. Silly if not inane to keep spending more money to fight those who feed our oil addiction. Not even a hardened drug addict would be that stupid to fight his supplier. Maybe it’s time to detox from oil. American natural gas, solar, wind and clean coal if need be sound good to me. Am I missing something?

Think what true leadership, a real plan, minimal bipartisan interests and the will to do so could bring. We have the resources, the people, the technical smarts and above all an absolute need. Maybe then we would be a proud nation able to wear the banner for being healthy, wealthy and wise.

Chart complements of The New York Times. United States is listed as having 4.3 % of its energy from renewables. EIA’sa 2008 Annual Report indicated U.S. generates 3.1% of its energy from renewables of which more 75% of the 3.1% is from hydroelectric plants.

Reminds me of one of Obama’s speeches he gave during his election as US President.

“I don’t care whether you’re driving a hybrid or an SUV. If you’re headed for a cliff, you have to change direction. That’s what the American people called for in November, and that’s what we intend to deliver”.

Unfortunately he is turning out to be as bad at action as good he is in talking talks.
